APPLICATIONS |
| |
Methylating Agent
|
| |
Dimethyl Sulphate is a strong methylating agent. It can be used to introduce
methyl group for the methylation of Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Sulfur,
Phosphorus, Some metals and Heteroatoms of Groups VA and VIA.
|
| |
Sulfonation
|
| |
Dimethyl Sulphate acts as a sulfonating agent. Sulfonation will
occur either by slow release of SO3 by heating DMS or by attack at
the sulfur end of the O-S bond. |
| |
Catalyst |
| |
Some
pyrolysis reaction is catalyzed by the presence of dimethyl
sulfate. In some cases catalytic effect of DMS may be due to the
slow release of sulfuric acid, either from hydrolysis or from
heat. |
